Google Standardizes Supported URI Schemes for Open URL Action in RCS

Google has announced an update to the supported URI schemes for the Open URL suggestion in RCS messages. This change aims to improve platform reliability and ensure a consistent user experience across the RCS ecosystem. The update will take effect on November 1, 2025.

Impact of This Change

  • Only http:// and https:// schemes will be supported in the url field for Open URL suggestion.
  • Any other URL schemes (e.g., tel:, mailto:, sms:) in this field will result in a 400 Bad Request error after the effective date.
  • This restriction applies to both RCS Send Node and Messaging API v2 on Webex Connect.

Action Required

  • Review and update all existing configurations to ensure that only http:// or https:// schemes are used in all Open URL suggestions.
